Why a photo-diode is operated in reverse bias whereas current in the forward bias is much larger than that in the reverse bias ? Explain. Mention its two uses.

It is easier to observe the change in current with change in light intensity if a reverse bias is applied.
Alternatively:
The fractional change due to photo effect on the minority carrier dominated reverse bias current, is more readily measureable than the fractional change in the forward bias current.
