Distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors. Although in an extrinsic semiconductor $\displaystyle \mathrm{n}_{\mathrm{e}} \neq \mathrm{n}_{\mathrm{h}}$, yet it is electrically neutral. Why ?
Marking-scheme solution
Intrinsic semiconductors are pure semiconductors while extrinsic semiconductors are doped with either trivalent or pentavalent impurities.Extrinsic semiconductor maintains an overall charge neutrality as the charge of additional charge carriers is just equal and opposite to that of the ionised cores in the lattice.
