Define barrier potential. Why does the thickness of the depletion layer in a p-n junction diode vary with increase in reverse bias?
Marking-scheme solution
(i) It is the potential developed across the p-n junction which tends to prevent the movement of majority charge carriers from both sides.
(ii) Under reverse bias, direction of applied voltage is same as the direction of barrier potential. As a result barrier height increase & the depletion region widens due to change in electric field.
