On spraying Bacillus thuringiensis on an infected cotton crop field the pests are killed by the toxin, however the toxin although produced by the bacteria does not affect it. Explain giving reason.
Marking-scheme solution
In bacteria toxin is produced in inactive form/protoxin, insect ingests it, protoxin/inactive protein becomes active due to alkaline pH of gut (solubilize), toxin binds to epithelial cells (of midgut) and creates pores, causes swelling, lysis and death.
