If $\displaystyle \mathrm{a}=\sin ^{-1}\left(\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\right)+\cos ^{-1}\left(-\frac{1}{2}\right)$ and $\displaystyle \mathrm{b}=\tan ^{-1}(\sqrt{3})-\cot ^{-1}\left(-\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}\right)$ then find the value of $\displaystyle \mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b}$.
Marking-scheme solution
$$\begin{aligned}
& \mathrm{a}=\frac{\pi}{4}+\frac{2 \pi}{3}, \mathrm{b}=\frac{\pi}{3}-\frac{2 \pi}{3} \\
& \therefore \mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b}=\frac{7 \pi}{12}
\end{aligned}
