Why are melting points of transition metals high ?
(ii)
Why the transition metals generally form coloured compounds ?
(iii)
Why $\displaystyle \mathrm{E}^{\circ}$ value for $\displaystyle \mathrm{Mn}^{3+} / \mathrm{Mn}^{2+}$ couple is highly positive?
Marking-scheme solution
(i) Because of strong intermetallic bonding / strong interatomic interactions forces.
(ii) Because of the presence of unpaired electrons in \(\displaystyle d\)-orbital / due to \(\displaystyle d-d\) transition.
(iii) Because of much larger third ionization enthalpy of Mn / stable halffilled \(\displaystyle 3 d^{5}\) configuration in \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Mn}^{2+}\).
