Following ions of 3d-transition series are given : \[\mathrm{Ti}^{4+}, \mathrm{V}^{3+}, \mathrm{Cr}^{3+}, \mathrm{Mn}^{3+} \] (Atomic number : $\displaystyle \mathrm{Ti}=22, \mathrm{~V}=23, \mathrm{Cr}=24, \mathrm{Mn}=25$)Identify the ion which is(i)most stable in aqueous solution.(ii)a strong oxidising agent.(iii)colourless in aqueous solution. Give suitable reason in each.

Identify the ion which is
(i)
most stable in aqueous solution.
(ii)
a strong oxidising agent.
(iii)
colourless in aqueous solution. Give suitable reason in each.
Marking-scheme solution
(i) \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Cr}^{3+}\), due to stable \(\displaystyle t_{2 g}^{3}\) configuration.
(ii) \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Mn}^{3+}\), as Mn is more stable in +$\displaystyle 2$ oxidation state / stable half-filled \(\displaystyle \mathrm{d}^{5}\) configuration of \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Mn}^{2+}\).
(iii) \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Ti}^{4+}\), no unpaired electrons / no d-d transition / \(\displaystyle \mathrm{d}^{0}\) configuration.
