(a)
Silver atom has completely filled d-orbitals in its ground state, it is still considered to be a transition element. Justify the statement.
(ii)
Why are $\displaystyle \mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{M}^{2+} / \mathrm{M}}^{\ominus}$ values of Mn and Zn more negative than expected ?
(iii)
Why do transition metals form alloys ?
Answer the following questions on the basis of the figure given below:
(i)
Which element in 3d series has lowest enthalpy of atomisation ?
(ii)
Why do metals of the second and third series have greater enthalpies of atomisation ?
(iii)
Why are enthalpies of atomisation of transition metals quite high ?
Marking-scheme solution
(i)
Silver has incompletely filled d-orbitals / $\displaystyle \mathrm{d}^{9}$ configuration in +$\displaystyle 2$ oxidation state.
(ii)
$\displaystyle \mathrm{Mn}^{2+}$ and $\displaystyle \mathrm{Zn}^{2+}$ has stable half-filled and fully filled configurations / relatively less sublimation enthalpy of Mn and Zn.
(iii)
Because of similar atomic radii.
(i)
Zn
(ii)
It is because of frequent metal-metal bonding / due to poor shielding effect of d and f orbitals.
(iii)
Due to strong intermetallic bonding / strong interatomic interaction.
