Following ions of 3d transition series are given : \[\mathrm{Ti}^{2+}, \mathrm{Fe}^{2+}, \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}, \mathrm{Zn}^{2+} \] (Atomic number : $\displaystyle \mathrm{Ti}=22, \mathrm{Fe}=26, \mathrm{Cu}=29, \mathrm{Zn}=30$ ) Identify the ion, which is(i)a strong reducing agent in aqueous solution.(ii)more stable than its +$\displaystyle 1$ oxidation state.(iii)colourless in aqueous solution. Give a suitable reason in each.

(i)
a strong reducing agent in aqueous solution.
(ii)
more stable than its +$\displaystyle 1$ oxidation state.
(iii)
colourless in aqueous solution. Give a suitable reason in each.
Marking-scheme solution
(i)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{Fe}^{2+}\), Fe is more stable in \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Fe}^{3+}\) due to half-filled \(\displaystyle \mathrm{d}^{5}\) configuration.
(ii)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\), due to high \(\displaystyle \Delta_{\mathrm{hyd}} H^{\circ}\) of \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}\) than \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Cu}^{+}\).
(iii)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{Zn}^{2+}\), no unpaired electrons / no d-d transition.
