GM cotton crop contains Bt toxin protein which exists as inactive protoxins, but once
bollworm ingest the inactive toxin it is converted into an active form due to the alkaline pH of the gut of the worm, which solubilizes the crystals of the prototoxin, activated toxin binds to the surface of the midgut epithelial cells of the worm and creates pores that cause swelling and lysis and death of the insect caterpillar.
