Find the temperature at which the resistance of a conductor increases by $\displaystyle 25$% of its value at $\displaystyle 27$ °C. The temperature coefficient of resistance of the conductor is $\displaystyle 2.0 \times 10^{-4}\ {}^{\circ}\mathrm{C}^{-1}$.
Marking-scheme solution
$\displaystyle R_{2}=R_{1}+25 \%$ of $\displaystyle R_{1}=1.25 R_{1}$
Temperature coefficient of resistance:
$\displaystyle \alpha=\frac{R_{2}-R_{1}}{R_{1} \cdot \Delta T}$
$\displaystyle T_{2}-27=\frac{1.25 R_{1}-R_{1}}{R_{1} \times 2 \times 10^{-4}}$
$\displaystyle T_{2}=1277^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$
