Draw the graph showing the variation of binding energy per nucleon with mass number A of nuclei $\displaystyle (2<\mathrm{A}<170)$. Use this graph to explain the release of energy in nuclear fission.

Graph of Binding Energy per nucleon versus mass number (A) $\displaystyle 1$ Explanation for release of energy in nuclear fission $\displaystyle 1$ Graph :Explanation: A very heavy nucleus has lower binding energy per nucleon compared to that of lighter nuclei. Thus if a heavier nucleus breaks into two nuclei, nucleons get more tightly bound. This implies, energy would be released in the process. Alternatively In nuclear fission, a heavy nucleus breaks B.E/nucleon increases. So energy is released.
