Draw a plot showing the variation of potential energy of a pair of nucleons as a function of their separation (r). Using this plot, show that the nuclear force is (i) attractive for $\displaystyle \mathrm{r}>\mathrm{r}_{0}$, and (ii) repulsive for $\displaystyle \mathrm{r}<\mathrm{r}_{0}$.
Marking-scheme solution
From the above plot, potential energy is minimum at distance $\displaystyle \mathbf{r}_{\mathbf{0}}$. Therefore,
(i)
the force is attractive for $\displaystyle \mathrm{r}>\mathrm{r}_{0}$.
(ii)
the force is repulsive for $\displaystyle \mathrm{r}<\mathrm{r}_{0}$.
