(a)
Briefly discuss three characteristics of the forces between nucleons.
(b)
Which out of $\displaystyle { }_{4}^{8} \mathrm{X}$ and $\displaystyle { }_{3}^{5} \mathrm{Y}$ nuclei is more stable and why?
Marking-scheme solution
(a)
Characteristics of nuclear forces:
1. Saturated in nature.
2. Attractive for distances larger than $\displaystyle r_{0}$ and repulsive for distances less than $\displaystyle r_{0}$.
3. Do not depend on the nature of electric charge, i.e. same for n-n, n-p and p-p pairs.
4. Much stronger than gravitational forces.
(b)
$\displaystyle { }_{4}^{8} \mathrm{X}$ is more stable.
The ratio of the number of neutrons to the number of protons is more in $\displaystyle { }_{4}^{8} \mathrm{X}$ than $\displaystyle { }_{3}^{5} \mathrm{Y}$.
