(i) Rowlatt Act had been hurriedly passed through the imperial Legislative council despite the united opposition of Indian members.
(ii) It gave the government enormous powers to repress political activities.
(iii) It allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.
(iv) Gandhiji wanted non – violent civil disobedience against it.
(v) For this reason Gandhiji in $\displaystyle 1919$ decided to launched a nationwide Satyagraha against it.
(vi) Martial Law was imposed and railway, Teligraph services were disrupted.

(i) It drew the struggles of peasants and tribals into its fold.
(ii) In Awadh, peasants were led by Baba Ramchandra, a Sanyasi.

(iv) Peasants had to do begar and work at landlords’ farms without any payment.
(v) The peasant movement demonstrated for reduction of revenue and abolition of begar.
