(a)
What is the heating effect of electric current ?
(b)
Write an expression for the amount of heat produced in a resistor when an electric current is passed through it stating the meanings of the symbols used.
(c)
Name two appliances based on heating effect of electric current.
Marking-scheme solution
(a) When an electric current is passed through a conductor, it becomes hot because the source energy is dissipated in the form of heat. This phenomenon is known as heating effect of electric current.
(b) \(\displaystyle H=I^{2} R t \quad\) or \(\displaystyle V I t \quad\) or \(\displaystyle \frac{V^{2}}{R} t\) H = Amount of heat produced R = Resistance I = Current \(\displaystyle t=\) Time V = Potential Difference
(c) Electric iron, geyser, heater
