In a current carrying conductor, when one joule of work is done to move a charge of $\displaystyle 1$ coulomb from one point to another.
$\displaystyle 1$ volt = $\displaystyle 1$ joule/$\displaystyle 1$ coulomb or \(\displaystyle 1 \mathrm{~V}=1 \mathrm{~J} \mathrm{C}^{-1}\)
