Displacement current is the current which arises due to the rate of change of electric field. Displacement current is due to a varying electric field. Conduction current is due to the motion of electrons in the presence of an electric field. When the capacitor is being charged by a source of emf, the electric field between the plates of the capacitor changes with time. It produces a displacement current $\displaystyle i_{d}$ whose magnitude is equal to the conduction current $\displaystyle i_{c}$. Therefore the current is continuous in the circuit.
