Consider the arrangement of two coils $\displaystyle P$ and $\displaystyle Q$ shown in the figure. When current in coil $\displaystyle P$ is switched on or switched off, a current flows in coil $\displaystyle Q$.(a)Explain the phenomenon involved in it.(b)Mention two factors on which the current produced in coil Q depends.(c)Give the direction of current in coil Q when there is a current in the coil $\displaystyle P$ and (i) $\displaystyle R$ is increased, and (ii) $\displaystyle R$ is decreased.

Mutual Induction
When an alternating voltage is applied to the primary, the resulting current produces an alternating magnetic flux which links the secondary and induces an emf in it.
(b)
Factors on which the current produced in coil Q depends will be:
(i)
Number of turns in coil P and Q
(ii)
Current flowing through coil P.
(iii)
Resistance of coil Q.
(iv)
Mutual Induction between the two coils.
(c)
The direction of current through coil Q:
(i)
Clockwise when R is increased.
(ii)
Anticlockwise when R is decreased.
