Write reasons for the following statements :(i)Benzoic acid does not undergo Friedel-Crafts reaction.(ii)Oxidation of aldehydes is easier than that of ketones.
Write reasons for the following statements :
(i)
Benzoic acid does not undergo Friedel-Crafts reaction.
(ii)
Oxidation of aldehydes is easier than that of ketones.
Marking-scheme solution
(i) Benzoic acid do not undergo Friedel-Crafts reaction because the carboxyl group is deactivating and the catalyst aluminium chloride gets bonded to the carboxyl group.
(ii) Because of oxidation of aldehyde involves cleavage of C-H bond which is weaker than C-C bond of ketone.
