Explain the main characteristics of the organised sector.

(i) Organised sector covers those enterprises or places of work where the terms of employment are regular.
(ii) People have assured work.
(iii) The enterprises are registered by the government.
(iv) They have to follow government rules and regulations.
(v) They have to abide by various laws such as the Factories Act, Minimum Wages Act, Payment of Gratuity Act, Shops and Establishments Act etc.
(vi) This sector has some formal processes and procedures.
(vii) Some people may work on their own, but they have to register themselves with the government and follow the rules and regulations.
(viii) Workers in this sector enjoy security of employment.
(ix) They are expected to work only a fixed number of hours.
(x) If they work more, they have to be paid overtime by the employer.
(xi) They get paid leave and payment during holidays.
(xii) They are entitled to get medical benefits.
(xiii) They are paid provident fund, gratuity etc.
(xiv) The factory manager has to ensure facilities like clean drinking water and a safe working environment.
(xv) On retirement, these workers get pensions as well.
