Marking-scheme solution
\(\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}\)
lose four electrons forming \(\displaystyle \mathrm{C}^{4+}\) cation. But it would require a large amount of energy to remove four electrons leaving behind a carbon cation with six protons in its nucleus.
∴ It shares four electrons of the outermost shell to form covalent bond/covalent compound.
(ii)
There are weak forces of attraction between the molecules of covalent compound.
(iii)
(I)
Covalent compounds do not form ions hence are poor conductors.
(II)
Carbon-carbon single bond is very strong and stable.
