Consider the given electric circuit :
Calculate the following :
(a)
Total resistance of the circuit
(b)
The electric current drawn from the battery
(c)
Potential difference between points P and Q
Marking-scheme solution
(a)
\(\displaystyle 4 \Omega\) and \(\displaystyle 1 \Omega\) are in series, \(\displaystyle \mathrm{R}_{\mathrm{s}}=4 \Omega+1 \Omega=5 \Omega\)
Resistance across R and \(\displaystyle \mathrm{S}, \frac{1}{\mathrm{R}_{1}}=\frac{1}{5}+\frac{1}{5}\)
\[\mathrm{R}_{1}=\frac{5}{2} \Omega
\]
\(\displaystyle 2 \Omega\) and \(\displaystyle 3 \Omega\) are in series, \(\displaystyle \mathrm{R}_{\mathrm{s} 1}=2 \Omega+3 \Omega=5 \Omega\)
Resistance across P and \(\displaystyle \mathrm{Q}, \frac{1}{\mathrm{R}_{2}}=\frac{1}{5}+\frac{1}{5}\)
\[\mathrm{R}_{2}=\frac{5}{2} \Omega
\]
Total resistance:
\[\begin{aligned}
\mathrm{R} & =\mathrm{R}_{1}+\mathrm{R}_{2} \\
& =\frac{5}{2}+\frac{5}{2} \\
& =5 \Omega
\end{aligned}
\]
(b)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{I}=\frac{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{R}}\)
\[\begin{aligned}
& I=\frac{10}{5} \\
& I=2 \mathrm{~A}
\end{aligned}
\]
(c)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{V}=\mathrm{I} \mathrm{R}\)
\[V=2 \times \frac{5}{2}
\]
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{V}=5 \mathrm{~V}\)
