Two people are $\displaystyle 16$ km apart on a straight road. They start walking at the same time. If they walk towards each other with different speeds, they will meet in $\displaystyle 2$ hours. Had they walked in the same direction with same speeds as before, they would have met in $\displaystyle 8$ hours. Find their walking speeds.
Marking-scheme solution
Let walking speeds be x km/hr. and y km/hr. ( \(\displaystyle \mathrm{x}>\mathrm{y}\) )
ATQ, \(\displaystyle 2 x+2 y=16\)
and \(\displaystyle \mathbf{8 x}-\mathbf{8 y}=\mathbf{1 6}\)
Solving to get \(\displaystyle \mathrm{x}=5, \mathrm{y}=3\)
Speeds are $\displaystyle 5$ km/hr. $\displaystyle 3$ km/hr.
