Two numbers are in the ratio $\displaystyle 2$ : $\displaystyle 3$ and their LCM is $\displaystyle 180$ . What is the HCF of these numbers ?
Marking-scheme solution
Let the numbers be 2x, 3x
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{LCM}=6 \mathrm{x}=180 \Rightarrow \mathrm{x}=30\)
∴ Numbers are $\displaystyle 60$, $\displaystyle 90$
HCF \(\displaystyle (60,90)=30\)
