CBSE 2025 · Region 3 · Set 3 · Q33 · 5 marks
The students of a class are made to stand equally in rows. If $\displaystyle 3$ students are extra in each row, there would be $\displaystyle 1$ row less. If $\displaystyle 3$ students are less in a row, there would be $\displaystyle 2$ more rows. Find the number of students in the class.
Marking-scheme solution
Let number of students in each row be \(\displaystyle x\) and the number of rows be \(\displaystyle y\)
∴ Total number of students \(\displaystyle =x y \operatorname{ATQ},(x+3)(y-1)=x y \Rightarrow x-3 y+3=0\) Also, \(\displaystyle (x-3)(y+2)=x y \Rightarrow 2 x-3 y-6=0\) On solving these equations, we get \(\displaystyle x=9\) and \(\displaystyle y=4\) ∴ Number of students in the class \(\displaystyle =x y=9 \times 4=36\)
