In a class test, Veer scored $\displaystyle 6$ more than twice as many marks as Kevin scored. If one of them had scored $\displaystyle 4$ more marks, their total score would have been 40. Marking-scheme solution
Let the marks obtained by Veer and Kevin be V and K respectively.
According to the question,
\[\mathrm{V}=2 \mathrm{~K}+6
\]
\[\mathrm{V}+\mathrm{K}+4=40
\]
Solving (i) and (ii) we get, \(\displaystyle \mathrm{V}=26\) and \(\displaystyle \mathrm{K}=10\)
∴ Veer obtained $\displaystyle 26$ marks and Kevin obtained $\displaystyle 10$ marks.
Correct solution: \(\displaystyle x=4, \mathrm{y}=2\)
