The perimeter of a rectangle is $\displaystyle 70$ cm. The length of the rectangle is $\displaystyle 5$ cm more than twice is breadth. Express the given situation as a system of linear equations in two variables and hence solve it.
Marking-scheme solution
Let the length and breadth of rectangle be \(\displaystyle x\) and \(\displaystyle y\) respectively.
ATQ
\[x+y=35 \ldots \text{(i)}
\]
\[\text{and } x-2 y=5 \ldots \text{(ii)}
\]
Solving (i) and (ii), we get
\(\displaystyle x=25\) and \(\displaystyle y=10\)
Hence the length and breadth of rectangle are $\displaystyle 25$ cm and $\displaystyle 10$ cm respectively.
