A ray of light is incident at an angle i on a parallel sided glass slab of thickness'$\displaystyle d$'and gets refracted into the slab at angle $\displaystyle r$. Draw a ray diagram to show its path as its emerges out of the slab. Hence, obtain an expression for the lateral shift of the ray. Under what condition will the shift be minimum?
Marking-scheme solution
Ray diagram
\[\underset{A}{\stackrel{i 0}{B} \longleftrightarrow S_{i}-\underset{C}{-1} \ldots}
\]
\(\displaystyle \cos r=\frac{B E}{B C}=\frac{d}{B C}\)
Putting in equation
\[C D=\frac{d \sin (i-r)}{\cos r}
\]
Shift will be minimum for minimum angle of incidence.
