A ray is incident on a prism of material of refractive index $\displaystyle \sqrt{2}$ at point M such that it grazes along NC after emerging from the prism, as shown in the figure.
Find :(a)the critical angle for the prism.(b)the angle of refraction at face AB.
A ray is incident on a prism of material of refractive index $\displaystyle \sqrt{2}$ at point M such that it grazes along NC after emerging from the prism, as shown in the figure.
Find :
(a)
the critical angle for the prism.
(b)
the angle of refraction at face AB.
Marking-scheme solution
$$\begin{aligned}
& \mu=\frac{1}{\sin i_{c}} \Rightarrow \sqrt{2}=\frac{1}{\sin i_{c}} \\
& i_{c}=45^{\circ}
\end{aligned}
b)
r_{2}=45^{\circ}=i_{c}
$\displaystyle A=r_{1}+r_{2}$
$\displaystyle 60=r_{1}+45^{\circ}$
r_{1}=15^{\circ}
