Explain the mechanism of acid catalysed hydration of ethene.
Marking-scheme solution
The mechanism of the reaction involves the following three steps:Step $\displaystyle 1$: Protonation of alkene to form carbocation by electrophilic attack of $\displaystyle H_3O^+$.\[H_2O + H^+ \rightarrow H_3O^+ \]
Step $\displaystyle 2$: Nucleophilic attack of water on carbocation.
Step $\displaystyle 3$: Deprotonation to form an alcohol.
