HIV attacks macrophages and helper T-lymphocytes (T-helper cells), leads to decrease in T-helper cells, patient becomes immuno-deficient / reduced immunity , becomes prone to infection by pathogens (Mycobacterium/viruses/fungi and even parasites like Toxoplasma).
