How is a double displacement reaction different from a displacement reaction ? Explain giving example in the form of balanced chemical equations.
Marking-scheme solution
In a double displacement reaction, an exchange of ions takes place between the reactants whereas in a displacement reaction a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.
\(\displaystyle \bullet \mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}+\mathrm{BaCl}_{2} \longrightarrow \mathrm{BaSO}_{4}+2 \mathrm{NaCl}\) (Double displacement Reaction)
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{Fe}+\mathrm{CuSO}_{4} \rightarrow \mathrm{FeSO}_{4}+\mathrm{Cu}\) (Displacement reaction)
