Explain in brief the function of an electric fuse in a domestic circuit. An electric heater of current rating $\displaystyle 3 \mathrm{~kW} ; 220 \mathrm{~V}$ is to be operated in an electric circuit of rating $\displaystyle 5$ A . What is likely to happen when the heater is switched 'ON' ? Justify your answer with necessary calculation.
Marking-scheme solution
It prevents damage to the appliances and the electrical circuit from overloading and short circuiting.
-
Here \(\displaystyle \mathrm{P}=3 \mathrm{~kW}=3000 \mathrm{~W}, \mathrm{~V}=220 \mathrm{~V}, \mathrm{I}=\) ?
P = V I
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{I}=\frac{\mathrm{P}}{\mathrm{V}}=\frac{3000 W}{220 V}=13.63 \mathrm{~A}\)
$\displaystyle 13$‧$\displaystyle 63$ A > Rating of fuse $\displaystyle 5$ A, therefore fuse wire will melt and break the circuit.More from Magnetic Effects of Electric Current
