Marking-scheme solution
(a) (i)
(balancing may be ignored)A series of compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for hydrogen in a carbon chain. / Can be represented by a single general formula and successive members differ by \(\displaystyle -\mathrm{CH}_{2}\) unit or 14u.
\(\displaystyle \mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{4}\) and \(\displaystyle \mathrm{C}_{4} \mathrm{H}_{8}\) belong to the same homologous series/ are alkenes.
(ii) (I) \(\displaystyle \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{OH}+\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOH} \xrightarrow{\text { Acid }} \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{COOC}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{5}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\)
(II) \(\displaystyle \mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{5} \mathrm{OH}+3 \mathrm{O}_{2} \xrightarrow{\text { Burning }} 2 \mathrm{CO}_{2}+3 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}\)
