Find the ratio in which the y -axis divides the line segment joining the points $\displaystyle (5, -6)$ and $\displaystyle (-1, -4)$.

Let $\displaystyle \mathrm{P}(0, \mathrm{y})$ be the point on y axis which divides AB in the ratio $\displaystyle \mathrm{k}: 1$
\[\frac{-k+5}{k+1}=0 \Rightarrow k=5
\]Ratio is $\displaystyle 5$ : $\displaystyle 1$
