A wooden toy is made by scooping out a hemisphere of same radius as of cylinder, from each end of a wooden solid cylinder. If the height of the cylinder is $\displaystyle 20$ cm and its base is of radius $\displaystyle 7$ cm, find the total surface area of the toy.
Marking-scheme solution
Total surface area \(\displaystyle =4 \pi \mathrm{r}^{2}+2 \pi \mathrm{rh}\)
\[\begin{aligned}
& =4 \times \frac{22}{7} \times 7 \times 7+2 \times \frac{22}{7} \times 7 \times 20 \\
& =616+880=1496 \mathrm{~cm}^{2}
\end{aligned}
\]
